A raised bed keeps soil loose and drains well. Start with untreated cedar boards, a level patch of ground and a few hours on a dry weekend.
Cut four boards to length, screw the corners together, then fill the frame with a mix of compost and topsoil.

Great guide. How deep should the bed be for carrots?
Thanks, I built the bed this weekend and it went together fast.
Would pine boards work if I line the inside with plastic?
Last question: do you seal the cedar or leave it bare outdoors?
Which soil mix did you use for the lettuce bed?
The cedar boards worked well for me too. Do you oil them each spring?
Yes, a light coat of linseed oil every spring keeps the cedar in good shape.
Planning a second bed next to the first. Should I leave a gap for a path?
Leave about two feet. It makes watering and weeding much easier.
Two feet is a good rule of thumb. Mulch the path to keep weeds down.
I used pine instead of cedar and it has held up for two seasons.
One more question. Does the bed need a liner under the soil?
